Winter Green Can Tips
In cold weather, food scraps can freeze and stick to the bottom of your Green Can. The good news is frozen food scraps don’t smell. The bad news is it may be impossible for the crews to completely empty your Green Can when scraps freeze to it.
Here are some tips to keep your food scraps from freezing and sticking this winter:
- Store your Green Can indoors on the night before collection.
- Add some dry yard trimmings (like leaves or small twigs) to the bottom of your Green Can.
- Wrap your scraps in newspaper or paper bags to soak up moisture.
- Pre-freeze very wet food scraps in the freezer, wrapped in newspaper, then drop the frozen packages in your Green Can on collection day.
